Vikings Never Wore Horned Helmets

That iconic image of a Viking warrior with horns on his head? Completely made up.

Real Viking helmets were simple iron or leather domes. No horns. No wings. Just practical headgear designed to keep you alive in battle.

Horns would've been a terrible idea — enemies could grab them, they'd get caught on things, and they'd make your head a bigger target.

So where did the myth come from?

19th century costume designers. Specifically, a Swedish artist designed horned helmets for an 1876 opera production of a Wagner piece. It looked cool on stage. The image stuck. Everything you picture when you think "Viking" came from a theater costume 150 years ago.

The real Vikings would be insulted.
