Complete Plot Summary

Boys wake up in a clearing called the Glade with no memories except their names. Giant stone walls surround them, with doors that open during the day to a massive maze filled with mechanic monsters called Grievers. The doors close at night—being stuck in the maze overnight means death. Runners race through the maze daily, trying to find a way out before the doors close. Supplies arrive monthly via a lift. Then Thomas shows up and things change—his arrival triggers something. Teresa arrives the next day. The supplies stop coming.

Main Characters in The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner features complex characters representing different aspects of society and the human condition.

Thomas arrives with no memories, like everyone else. Alby leads the Gladers (boys trapped in the Glade). Newt is the level-headed second-in-command. Minho is the Keeper of the Runners who map the maze. Teresa is the first girl ever sent to the Glade, arriving the day after Thomas with a note saying she's the last. Chuck is the youngest, who Thomas befriends. Gally opposes Thomas from the start.

The Ending Explained

Thomas and Teresa recover partial memories: they helped create the maze. It's all an experiment by an organization called WICKED testing kids for something. The Gladers finally solve the maze, fight through Grievers (many die, including Chuck protecting Thomas), and reach an exit. They discover the world outside was scorched by solar flares and a disease called the Flare. WICKED was testing them as potential cure candidates. They escape WICKED's facility temporarily, but it's clear this is just the beginning. Dashner's themes: Authority figures lie to and use children. Memory defines identity. Working together beats individualism. The maze is artificial but the friendships are real. And sometimes escaping one trap just leads to another. It launched another YA dystopian series, playing on teen feelings of being manipulated by adults while facing challenges with incomplete information.
