The First Computer Bug

The origin of the term "computer bug" involves an actual moth and Grace Hopper's logbook.

The term "computer bug" has an interesting origin story. In 1947, engineers working on the Harvard Mark II computer found an actual moth trapped in one of the relay switches, causing the machine to malfunction. Grace Hopper, a pioneering computer scientist, taped the moth into the computer's logbook with the note "First actual case of bug being found."

While the term "bug" had been used in engineering contexts before this incident, this literal bug in the machine helped popularize the term in the computer industry.
