Why is John Hancock synonymous with signature?
According to legend Hancock signed his name largely and clearly so that King George could read it without his spectacles. However, Congress kept the identities of the signatory’s secret for several months in order to protect them from being charged with treason; John Hancock and the other signers did run a great risk for affixing their names to that document.
The reason his name appears in the middle of the top row of the Declaration is because he was president of the Continental Congress at the time the document was signed and approved.
